Top 20 M&A financial and legal advisers in North America for H1 2022 revealed

GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company, has revealed its league tables for top 20 financial and legal advisers by value and volume in North America for H1 2022.

As per GlobalData’s report, ‘Global and North America M&A Report Financial Adviser League Tables H1 2022, a total of 7,699 mergers and acquisitions (M&A) deals, worth $876.5bn, were announced in the North American region during H1 2022.

Top financial advisers by value and volume

Based on GlobalData’s Financial Deals Database, Goldman Sachs has emerged as the top M&A financial adviser in the region by both value and volume.

The firm advised on 98 deals worth $398.3bn.

GlobalData lead analyst Aurojyoti Bose said: “Despite Goldman Sachs falling short of hitting 100 deals and $400 billion in total value, as well as witnessing a decline in the number of deals it advised on in H1 2022 over H1 2021, the company registered an improvement in value as it advised on several big-ticket deals. The firm advised on a total of 37 billion-dollar deals, which included 12 deals valued more than $10 billion. Of these, two were valued more than $50 billion.”

The other high ranker by value was JP Morgan, which occupied second position by advising on $304.7bn worth of deals. It was followed by Morgan Stanley, with $248.7bn; Bank of America, with $236.5bn; and Citi, with $221.6bn.

In the volume table, Houlihan Lokey took the second position with 92 deals; followed by JP Morgan, with 83 deals; Jefferies, with 70 deals; and Stifel/KBW, with 61 deals.

Simpson Thacher & Bartlett and Kirkland & Ellis were the top M&A legal advisers in the North American region for H1 2022 by value and volume, according to GlobalData’s report, Global and North America M&A Report Legal Adviser League Tables H1 2022.

Simpson Thacher & Bartlett took the top position by value by advising on $331bn worth of deals. Kirkland & Ellis led the volume table by advising on a total of 367 deals.

Bose said: “Simpson Thacher & Bartlett and Kirkland & Ellis were the clear winners, outpacing their peers by a significant margin in their respective categories. Simpson Thacher & Bartlett advised on nine mega deals, including two deals valued at more than $50 billion, and it was the only firm to surpass $300 billion in total deal value. Meanwhile, Kirkland & Ellis was the only firm to advise on more than 300 deals during H1 2022.”

The other high ranker by value included Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, which took the second position by advising on $210bn worth of deals. It was followed by Wachtell Lipton Rosen & Katz, with $194.7bn; Kirkland & Ellis, with $150.7bn; and Gibson Dunn & Crutcher, with $143.2bn.

Latham & Watkins secured the second position in the volume table, with 166 deals; followed by Willkie Farr & Gallagher, with 123 deals; Jones Day, with 118 deals; and Goodwin Procter, with 114 deals.

GlobalData’s league tables are based on the real-time tracking of thousands of company websites, advisory firm websites and other reliable sources available on the secondary domain. A dedicated team of analysts monitors all these sources to gather in-depth details for each deal, including adviser names.
