Swiss wealth manager UBS has launched the India chapter of its independent philanthropic arm, the UBS Optimus Foundation.

UBS Optimus Foundation focuses on social finance and effective philanthropy.

The foundation serves clients, and partners with governments and development agencies to address social issues in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

In addition, UBS provides philanthropy advisory services to wealthy clients and family offices looking to use their wealth for the advantage of the society.

India expansion comes as the foundation accelerates its activities globally in climate, health, education, child protection and social finance.

The move will allow philanthropists and UBS clients a direct channel to participate in the activities of UBS Optimus Foundation in India and around the world.

UBS said that the foundation will deepen the firm’s commitment to the region and to clients devoted to alleviating social inequality and its root causes.

UBS head of Social Impact and UBS Optimus Foundation CEO Phyllis Costanza said: “By deepening our presence in India we hope to mobilise capital for systemic, positive change through client advisory, partnerships, innovative philanthropy, and social finance.”

Since 2002, UBS Optimus Foundation granted $47m to support causes across multiple social sectors in India.

A majority of these grants were aimed at supporting educational interventions, with an increased focus on health and child protection.

According to the company, these programmes have benefited four million children and helped train nearly 240,00 professionals since 2015.

UBS India country head and APAC chief digital information officer Uday Odedra said: “The launch of the UBS Optimus Foundation in India gives us the opportunity to multiply our impact by connecting clients and capital to focus on areas that can improve lives and create lasting change.”
