British asset manager Standard Life Investments has appointed Neil Slater as new CEO and representative director of its newly opened Tokyo office.

Slater, who previously served as a fund manager within the firm’s global real estate team, will now oversee the development and implementation of the company’s long term business strategy in Japan.

In the new role, he will spearhead an 11-member team covering key business and client servicing functions, and will report to executive director and head of global client group Colin Clark.

In addition, the company also appointed Mikifumi Watanabe as new vice chairman of Standard Life Investments (Japan).

Watanabe, who joined the company in 2015 as a senior advisor, will assist Slater on the development of the country’s business strategy. He will report to Slater.

"Neil and Mikifumi bring to the team a wealth of asset management expertise, coupled with global perspectives and local insight on Japan. Under their leadership, we aim to broaden our business and deliver sustainable growth in this significant market. As part of our global strategy and long term commitment to the Asia Pacific region, we look forward to taking our Japanese business to the next phase of development," Clark said.
