Nikko AM buys minority stake in ARK Investment Management

Japan’s Nikko Asset Management (Nikko AM) has purchased a minority stake in ARK Investment Management (ARK), a US-based investment manager.

The companies did not disclose the size of the stake or the financial terms of the deal.

Under the agreement, Nikko AM will get exclusivity to provide ARK products and investment strategies in Japan.

ARK founder and CEO Catherine Wood will retain a majority stake in the company, while ARK’s strategic US partner Resolute Investment Managers will own a minority stake.

Nikko AM president and CEO Takumi Shibata said: “The established expertise of our in-house investment team combined with ARK’s strategies focused on disruptive technology and innovation enable progressive solutions for our clients. Our Global Fintech Equity Fund is an example of the success we have already achieved together, and we are confident of more to come with this deepening of the connection.”

ARK invests in leaders, enablers, as well as beneficiaries of disruptive technologies. The firm already served as a sub adviser to Nikko AM’s global fintech equity fund that managed total assets of over JPY75bn ($681.5m) at the end of July 2017.
