Australia-based wealth manager Colonial First State has awarded a $55m mandate to investment manager Eight Investment Partners (8IP) to manage its Australian small-cap portfolio.

Under the deal, 8IP will manage an equity portfolio focused on smaller companies listed on the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX).

The mandate will be led by Series and Stephen Walsh, the principals of 8IP.

The Sydney-based boutique funds manager 8IP was set up in 2009 by Kerry Series, who previously co-founded Perennial Investment Partners.

Series said: "We are delighted to have been appointed by Colonial to manage this mandate as we have focused on building an institutional quality, boutique funds management company. Our focus is on generating alpha from investing in Australian small companies for institutional and high net worth investors."

"Stock picking is the key to investing successfully in the small cap space. We continue to identify exciting companies which we expect to outperform," added Walsh.
