French banking group BNP Paribas has named Nathalie Hartmann as its new head of compliance, replacing Eric Martin who will retire after a 42-year stint at the group.

Hartmann will take up the new responsibility on 1 October 2017, and will also join as a member of the group’s executive committee.

Since joining the group in 1985, Hartmann served in several roles across human resources, French retail network and corporate and institutional banking units.

BNP Paribas CEO Jean-Laurent Bonnafe said: “I have great confidence in the ability of Nathalie Hartmann, who has already demonstrated a strong understanding of what is at stake, in continuing to develop the Compliance function within our 2020 plan.”

At the same time, BNP Paribas also formed a new Company Engagement department that will work alongside the group’s all business lines to execute the group’s engagement strategy to support economic development, environment and energy transition; social inclusion and regional development; diversity and respect of human rights.

“Today’s social and environmental challenges require that our group contribute even more actively to sustainable growth. We have therefore made a decision to put in place a structure to support this ambition at all levels of the Group,” Bonnafe said.

This unit will be led by Antoine Sire and Bertrand Cizeau. Sire will rejoin the group as an executive committee member, while Cizeau will serve as deputy director of the new unit in addition to continuing his existing responsibility as head of group communications.

The pair will be supported by Laurence Pessez, group head of CSR, at the new unit. The group also unveiled plans to appoint an operational manager later for managing policies associated with energy transition.
