Northern Trust has named John McCareins as the new managing director of its asset management business in Asia-Pacific (APAC).

McCareins will manage Northern Trust’s asset management activities across Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

These activities include global equity portfolio management and global equity dealing from Hong Kong, investment strategy, relationship management and sales teams based in Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and Australia.

In an investment career of over 18 years, McCareins most recently served as head of the retirement practice Outsourced Chief Investment Officer (OCIO) business within Northern Trust’s Multi-Manager Solutions group.

He also served at T. Rowe Price, where he managed mutual fund as well as sub-advisory product development.

McCareins will be based in Hong Kong in his new role, reporting functionally to Northern Trust Asset Management EMEA and APAC head Wayne Bowers. He will report locally to Northern Trust APAC head William Mak.

Northern Trust operates from nine offices across Asia-Pacific, including Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and South Korea, and has also announced the launch of a new office in India in July 2016.
