Earlier in his career, he spent 37 years at Sumitomo Mitsui Banking, serving in several senior roles in Japan and overseas, including vice chairman and deputy president.

Outbound cross-border mergers and acquisitions by Japanese companies have been rising, supported by low interest rates, corporate governance reforms and a weaker yen, according to the bank.

Barclays Securities Japan Investment Banking head Yuzo Otsuka said: “Minoura’s appointment underscores our commitment to capturing growth opportunities in Japan. He has been an outstanding advisor and a terrific inspiration to our team. And now in his new capacity as Chairman, we will be able to deliver even greater value to our clients.”

Separately, in November, Barclays appointed Jean-François Mastrangelo as head of markets for Asia Pacific.

Based in Hong Kong, Mastrangelo is responsible for overseeing the bank’s global markets business across the region, with a focus on platform development, product expansion and client engagement.

Mastrangelo reports functionally to Adeel Khan, head of global markets, and regionally to Jaideep Khanna, CEO Asia Pacific.

He joined Barclays after nearly 20 years in global markets, most recently as head of equities for Asia Pacific at Société Générale, where he held senior roles in Paris and Hong Kong across structuring, trading and platform development.
