GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company, has revealed its league tables for top 10 financial and legal advisers by value and volume in financial services sector for H1 2022.

A total of 1,800 merger and acquisition (M&A) deals worth $235.9bn were announced in the sector during H1 2022.

Top financial advisers by value and volume

According to GlobalData’s ‘Global and Financial Services M&A Report Financial Adviser League Tables H1 2022’, Goldman Sachs and Piper Sandler have emerged as the top M&A financial advisers in the financial services sector during H1 2022 by value and volume, respectively.

Goldman Sachs advised on $89bn worth of deals, while Piper Sandler advised on 27 deals.

GlobalData lead analyst Aurojyoti Bose said: “Only three advisers managed to advise on 20 or more deals in H1 2022. While Piper Sandler went ahead to lead the league table by volume, Goldman Sachs led by value and occupied the third position in terms of volume.

“However, Piper Sandler, despite leading by volume, did not feature among the top 10 by value due to its involvement in low-value transactions. The average size of the deals advised by Piper Sandler stood at $80.3m while it was $4.5bn for Goldman Sachs.”

According to the financial deals database of GlobalData, the other high rankers by value included Morgan Stanley that occupied the second position by advising on $86.9bn worth of deals, followed by JP Morgan with $83.8bn, Citi with $65bn and Bank of America with $64.9bn.

In terms of volume, Stifel/KBW took the second position with 21 deals, followed by Goldman Sachs with 20 deals, Ernst & Young with 18 deals and Houlihan Lokey with 18 deals.

According to GlobalData’s ‘Global and Financial Services M&A Report Legal Adviser League Tables H1 2022’, AZB & Partners and Kirkland & Ellis have emerged as the top M&A legal advisers in the sector during the first half of 2022 by value and volume, respectively.

AZB & Partners advised on $68.3bn worth of deals, while Kirkland & Ellis advised on 29 deals.

GlobalData lead analyst Aurojyoti Bose said: “Although Kirkland & Ellis led the league table in terms of volume, but it lagged in terms of value and could not feature in the top 10 list by value.

“On the other hand, AZB & Partners, despite advising on relatively lesser number of deals, managed to top by value due to its involvement in big-ticket deals. It advised on three billion-dollar deals (≥ $1bn) that also included one mega deal valued more than $50bn.”

According to the financial deals database of GlobalData, the other high rankers by value included Cravath Swaine & Moore that took the second spot by advising on $60.3bn worth of deals, followed by  Argus Partners, Singhi & Co and Wadia Ghandy, jointly securing the third place with $58.5bn.

In terms of volume, Willkie Farr & Gallagher got the second position with 26 deals, followed by Alston & Bird with 26 deals, Allen & Overy with 21 deals, and AZB & Partners with 18 deals.
