Western Asset Management, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Legg Mason, has named Chia-Liang Lian as co-head of the emerging markets debt (EMD) team, effective April 2014.
In his new role, Lian will report to Kenneth Leech, co-CIO of Western Asset and will work alongside co-head Keith Gardner, who will retire in April 2016 after a spell of 22 years with the firm.

Lian will create a two-year succession plan for the emerging markets debt investment effort and will manage his time between the Pasadena, CA headquarters of Western Asset and its Singapore office until 2015.
Meantime, Western Asset has also appointed Desmond Soon as Co-head of investment management, Asia, with effect from April 2014.
Lian with 21 years of investment experience has joined Western Asset in 2011. Prior to joining Western Asset, he has worked for six years at Pacific Investment Management Company (PIMCO), as head of emerging Asia portfolio management.
Previously, Lian has worked for eight years at JP Morgan and Merrill Lynch as a sovereign debt strategist and also as a senior economist at the Monetary Authority of Singapore from 1993 to 1997.
