Swiss financial regulator FINMA has appointed the former UBS banker Mark Branson as its new chief executive, effective1 April 2014.

Prior to this appointment, Branson was working as interim CEO of FINMA since 1 February 2014.

Since 2010, Branson has been a member of the FINMA Executive Board and also served as the deputy CEO in the organization since February 2013, before getting appointed as the interim CEO.

Branson served as the head of UBS’s securities business in Japan from 2006 to 2008. He then served as CFO of its wealth management and Swiss bank division in Zurich before joining Finma.

FINMA Board of Directors chair Anne Héritier Lachat said that while in charge of banking supervision, Mark Branson has shown that he is well capable of becoming FINMA CEO.

"As a member of the Executive Board, he has shaped a number of important projects in all supervisory areas, as well as in international committees. He is fully acquainted with FINMA’s daily business and its long-term objectives," added Lachat.
