Lawson has worked as an economist for a variety of firms in Australia, France, America and the UK.

Most recently he was director and senior US economist at BNP Paribas in New York.

Euan Munro, head of Multi Asset Investing and Fixed Income at Standard Life Investments said: "He brings a wealth of experience in international markets including time working at BNP Paribas, New York, the Reserve Bank of Australia, the OECD in Paris and the Institute for International Finance in Washington."

The move will strengthen the multi-asset team, which manages funds such as the GBP16bilion Global Absolute Return Strategies (Gars) fund, after SLI lost David Millar, Dave Jubb and Richard Batty to Investec.
