Spanish authorities have ordered the local
holders of an estimated 3,000 bank accounts at HSBC’s Swiss private
bank to pay tax on their undeclared funds by 5 July.
The accounts details, passed on by French
prosecutors, could hold an estimated €6bn ($7.4bn), according to
local media reports.

The demands follow an investigation by Italy’s
financial police, Guardia di Finanza, into bank data stolen from
HSBC’s Swiss private bank branch that revealed close to 7,000
Italian-held accounts, containing an estimated $6.9bn.
Similar investigations could be expected in up
to 10 different European countries where owners of the Swiss-based
accounts reside.
In March, the details of about 15,000 HSBC
Swiss bank accounts, dating back to 2005 and 2006, were passed to
French prosecutors after Hervé Falciani, a former IT worker at the
bank, handed over information stored on his laptop.
HSBC Private Bank declined to comment on the
latest developments.
