Until recently, Meares was the group CEO of global private banking for the HSBC Group, located in London and then Hong Kong.
He retired from HSBC towards the end of 2011 after 32 years and has an international background having worked in Asia, the Middle East and the US.
Quilter chief executive Martin Baines said: "Chris Meares has an outstanding record and we are delighted that he has agreed to become our chairman."
