Nucleus is planning to launch a direct-to-consumer (D2C) platform to serve the 6,000 orphaned clients it currently refers to Hargreaves Lansdown every year.

Nucleus, which is currently an IFA-only platform, is considering expanding into the D2C to deal with the issue of orphaned clients, according to Investment Week.

The new D2C platform will allow the business to expand more rapidly, and is part of a wider trend which is seeing major platforms focus on more than one type of user.

Additionally, the platform will help the firm to retain those clients that it currently has to send on to D2C platforms.

David Ferguson, chief executive of Nucleus, said the plans are in the early stages but acknowledged the platform needs to address the issue of orphaned clients.

"There is a problem to be solved. We are in discussions with users about it," he added.
