Italy’s financial police, Guardia di Finanza,
said an investigation into bank data stolen from a Swiss HSBC
Private Bank branch has revealed close to 7,000 Italian-held
accounts, containing an estimated $6.9bn.

The 6,936 accounts belonged to 5,728 Italian
taxpayers of whom only 133 were registered companies or

Out of close to 7,000 accounts, 132 had
deposits of $10m or more.

According to Italian media reports, details of
the accounts were passed to Guardia di Finanza by the French public
prosecutor Eric de Montgolfier who claims to hold details of
130,000 HSBC Private Bank account holders.

In March, the account details, dating back to
2005 and 2006, were passed to French prosecutors after Hervé
Falciani, a former employee of the bank, handed over information
stored on his laptop.

HSBC Private Bank declined to comment on the
latest developments.
