According to the study report, the dividend-paying investments are held by 33% of UHNW investors – those with US$5 million to US$25 million in investable assets – who reported owning REITS at the end of 2011. Their average balance was US$492,000.

UHNWI preferred REITS to other alternative investments, including hedge funds (8%), venture capital (7%), private equity (13%), private placements (9%) and futures (7%).

Though REITs were owned by a smaller segment of less affluent millionaires and non-millionaire investors, the product was still shown to be preferred over other types of alternate investments, the report concluded.
