However, Fidelity expects to find a replacement for Mullan by the end of the year.
Burton, who joined Fidelity in 2007, currently serves as chief marketing officer of Fidelity Investments trillion dollar personal investing business and manages Fidelity’s retail customer strategy in the US.
Mullan has joined Fidelity Worldwide Investment in 2008 and was previously chief operating officer for Europe prior to becoming managing director in 2012. Prior to this, he had held various senior management roles at Barclays Wealth and Schroders.
A Fidelity spokeswoman said: "With Jim on board for this assignment, we are able to conduct a thorough search for a permanent candidate, and do so safe in the knowledge that the business will be managed in the interim by an exceptionally experienced and capable leader."
