Deutsche Bank strategist John-Paul Smith is leaving the bank to start an independent research firm, Bloomberg News has reported.

Smith, who joined Deutsche Bank from Pictet Asset Management in 2010, is launching the new firm Eclectic Strategy in partnership with his former Pictet colleague Emad Mostaque.

Smith, who was previously at Morgan Stanley, is known for bearish forecasts on emerging-market stocks.

While he was at Morgan Stanley, he correctly forecast Russia’s stock-market crash in 1998.
