Peter Costello, former treasurer of Australia, was named acting chairman of the A$92 billion (US$82 billion) fund by the Australian government.
Gonski previously also served as chairman of ASX Limited and a director of ANZ, Singapore Airlines and the Westfield Group.
Commenting on the appointment, Morschel said: "Gonski is one of Australia’s most respected business leaders and company directors. He knows ANZ well having previously served as a director from 2002 to 2007, and it is particularly pleasing to have someone of his caliber join the Board and to succeed me.
"Gonski’s business experience in Australia and in Asia, and his broad range of involvement with government and with the education and community sectors will be a significant asset for ANZ," Morschel added.
