Barclays Wealth and Investment Management has appointed James Buchanan-Michaelson as the new general manager for its Swiss private banking arm, Barclays Bank (Suisse).

Buchanan-Michaelson will report to Barclays’s head of wealth management for Europe Francesco Grosoli and will be responsible for overseeing the operations of the private banking business and implementing Barclays’ strategy in Switzerland.

Prior to joining Barclays, Buchanan-Michaelson was associated with Coutts as managing director and member of its general management committee.

Grosoli said: "It is with great pleasure that I can confirm James’ appointment as General Manager of Barclays Bank (Suisse). This is a senior hire which further demonstrates our commitment to the wealth management business in Europe.

"James brings significant experience of private banking and Swiss businesses which will prove to be invaluable as we continue to develop Switzerland as a strategic location to support our wealth management clients."

Barclays Wealth and Investment Management has also named James Persse as head of private banking for Geneva and deputy general manager, who will report to Buchanan-Michaelson after assuming the role.
