Charles de Boissezon, chief executive of
Banque Piguet & Cie has decided to retire from the Geneva bank
in order to make a television series based on the history of
China.

The banker denied that his decision was linked to the current
crisis, saying “I am 59 and thought that, if I wanted to do
something different, now had to be the time.”

De Boissezon, who was born in Hong Kong and whose family has a long
history in Asia, plans to leave next month once his successor is
announced. He will then embark on a project to make a TV mini
series on China’s history as seen through the lives of three
British, French and Chinese families during the turbulent years
from 1864 to 1945.

He hopes to sell the series, to be shot entirely in China, to major
channels, such as the BBC in Britain and HBO in the US. He believes
that there is a real thirst for knowledge about China in the wake
of the Olympics.

De Boissezon’s family has had a long history in Asia, after his
great grandfather travelled there in the 19th century to engage in
the silk trade.

But the banker confesses that he will miss the world of Geneva
private banking, saying that for any private banker “it’s a real
dream to work in classic Swiss private banking. You have to
acknowledge that the Swiss are founders of the business and they
are still the benchmark for others to follow.”
