National Bank has named Martin Gagnon as its new head of wealth management and co-president and co-CEO of its subsidiary National Bank Financial.

Gagnon will replace Luc Paiement, who has now been appointed as an executive advisor.

In his tenure of about 35 years at National Bank, Paiement held strategic roles in the wealth management, corporate and investment banking and institutional equity divisions.

Gagnon, who will assume the new role on 1 July 2016, started his career at National Bank in 1987 in the Treasury unit. Later, he held roles in financial engineering and asset/liability management within financial markets.

His career also includes a stint at Goldman Sachs in Canada and the US, where he served after quitting National bank in 1993. He returned to National Bank in 2003 as co-CEO of Innocap Investment Management.

He most recently served as senior vice-president – intermediary business solutions within wealth management at National Bank, a role in which he was appointed in 2011.
