The 300 richest people on the planet added US$524 billion to their collective net worth, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

The aggregate net worth of the world’s top billionaires stood at US$3.7 trillion at the market close on 31 December 2013, according to the ranking.

The biggest gains came in the technology industry, which soared 28% during the year.

Of the 300 people who appeared on the final ranking of 2013, only 70 registered a net loss for the 12-month period.

Bill Gates, the founder and chairman of technology giant Microsoft was the year’s biggest gainer. His fortune increased by US$15.8 billion to US$78.5 billion, according to the index, as shares of Microsoft rose 40%.

Gates regained the top spot in the Bloomberg Billionaires Index from Carlos Slim, owner of America Movil, the largest mobile-phone operator in the Americas. Slim has a net worth pegged at US$72 billion.
