Meanwhile, the responsibilities of Smoker will be overseen by the firm’s private banking head Hugh Titcomb.
Alan Dickinson, chairman of Brown Shipley, said: "It is a rare achievement in the City these days for a member of staff to complete such long service with one organisation.
"On behalf of the board, I would like to thank Smoker for his significant contribution. I am sure he will be successful in whatever he chooses to do in the future."
Commenting on his departure, Smoker said: "I am immensely proud to have been involved with Brown Shipley for such a long time and wish the business well as it continues its development into the future.
"As to next steps, 37 years is a long time by any measure and my immediate plan is to take a break – thereafter, I will see what opportunities arise, either within the banking sector or outside."
